Is it okay to eat mussels served with hair on the shells

i was at a thai restaurant this evening and ordered mussels which i have eaten several times in the past but this time when served there were small hairs (looking almost like spider legs) on the shells...i have not seen this before and was wondering if it was okay to consume them or if this is a result of improper cleaning or cooking??
