Why do parents not know what their children want for Christmas?

Some of us dont have the luxury of having a child that can speak or communicate well so some people have to ask what a child would like at a certain age. My 6 year old for example can not speak because of autism but is able to function and play ect. so I would probably be one of these people who would ask such a question.
