Characterization in The Great Gatsby?

Can someone please help me understand how to write a characterization or character ysis essay on this book? I'm really confused and my teacher doesn't help. I'll probably end up writing it about Nick, and Fitzgerald's use of indirect characterization but aside from that, I'm lost
